The Sinh as the traditional garment associated with Lao women is widely known but has rarely been thoroughly described and analysed. This work reconstructs and interprets the interaction between the processes and the products of weaving. Taken as system of symbols, the diversity of motifs and forms of Sinh textiles reveals the cultural and social concepts that organize the lives of Lao women according to the provinces where they live. Besides, a visual narrative with lively proverbs and poems, this important critique depicts the significant synchronic events in the everyday life of Lao people, such as the ‘Boun Kin Kum’ ceremony to bring health and prosperity of the engagement rituals of Tai Daeng men. (Preface)

Apart from the use of the Sinh in traditional customs, Lao people see this garment as a communicator of love. The young give Sinh to their elders to show love and respect, friends give Sinh to friends to show true companionship, and a man give Sinh to his wife or his lover to show his heart. From the past to now and into the future, the Sinh has been with Lao women and will continure to play its important role endlessly.
