Joking Apart. Illustrated by Paul Noonan.

In this , his latest collection of essays, Mr. Sheridan adds to his reputation as a humorist with a sure sense of style and a philosopher with a sense of humour.
He puts a glow on the commonplace, and so restores that ancient hierarchy of values which is often obscured in an age when we tend to be overshadowed by our achievements, and when, by a strange inversion, computers and space-ships steal the spotlight from the mind that plans them.
Mr. Sheridan shifts our attention from the things that seem to matter to the things that really matter, to ourselves and the man next door. His message is that life is still worth living, and that as rational beings we are the giants of earth and bigger than anything that may happen to us the day after tomorrow.
He wins us by his deceptively easy style, bespeaks our sympathy with simulated helplesness, and chooses his material from happenings and reflections that are as valid in our experience as in his. (Front dustjacket flap)
