Prophets, Priests And Patriarchs: Sketches of the Sects of Palestine and Syria. [With three original letters].

[This item is part of the Sir Harry Luke – Archive / Collection]. London, The Faith Press Ltd., 1927. 22 cm x 14,5 cm. IX, 130 pages, 30 illustrations and including the beautiful, large fold-out-plan in colour: “Plan of the Holy Sepulchre and Surroundings”. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket in protective Mylar. Harry Luke’s (Lukach) personal copy. Some tearing to dustjacket. Otherwise in very good condition.

Loosely inserted in the book are letters and ephemera:

1. A letter from Harry Charles Luke as the Chairman of Ancient Oriental Churches Committee of the C.F.R. to A. Stevens Esq., The Faith Press, dated June 16th, 1964. Luke is enquiring about creating a new edition of the book “Prophets, Priests and Patriarchs”, “in view of the recent visits to Jerusalem of the Pope and the Ecumenical Patriarch and various other develompents of that nature”; [Luke mentions that the book is out-of-print (in the year 1964)]

2. An interesting letter on the Jewish / Arab – question from Ralph Poston, British Administrator and Anglican Priest on Cyprus as well as PBS (Palestine Broadcasting Service) Controller and later NEBS Director is writing here to Luke from Cuddesdon College, Oxford, about his book “Prophets, Priests and Patriarchs” / Luke notes on the letter that Poston was an Information officer on Cyprus and reviewed Luke’s book on Cyprus in the National Review, (Letter is dated September 19th, 1957). Poston writes to Luke: “….as you will see from the adress i am no longer in Cyprusbut am following Rex Champion into a very different field….I have recently been reading your ‘Prophets, Priests and Patriarchs’ with great pleasure. It brought back many memories of long confabulations with Mantoura over precedence and the difficulties of broadcasting from the Holy Places…″

3. A letter from librarian / researcher Valerie Krakau thanking Luke for helping identifying a photograph on the Douglas Papers [these are Canon John Albert Douglas Papers] dated November 18th, 1967 and written from Lambeth Palace Library. Valerie Krakau also praises the book “Prophets, Priests and Patriarchs″

4. A leaflet “Announcing the new Archbishopricy in Jerusalem”.

5. Ephemera: An advertising leaflet from the publisher, advertising the book “Prophets, Priests and Patriarchs”
