The title poem in this book was adapted into a libretto for Benjamin Britten’s opera of the same name. Slater was an English poet, playwright and novelist who was born in Millom, Cumberland in 1902. He was well-known for his left-wing sympathies and wrote a drama about the miners’ strike in 1926 called Stay Down, Miner. He died in London in 1956.
