Famed Polish director Wajda is perhaps best known in the West for his films Ashes and Diamonds and Kanal , both of which deal with World War II. Despite the subtitle’s implication, biographical elements are incidental. This is basically a textbook on directing, written from the perspective of Wajda’s long experience and not insignificant insights. All aspects of filmmaking are considered, from the initial screenplay to music scoring. Wajda stresses the team approach and generously gives credit to many of his long-time coworkers. He also, rather circumspectly, discusses censorship in Poland. [From Library Journal]
