A collection of legends from the Spanish tradition, each chosen to represent one of the regions into which the Spanish portion of the Iberian Peninsula is historically divided. The legends have as rich and varied a history as the country itself. Some come down from ancient times, themes which have run throughout the medieval world. Others were inspired by local myths deriving from a pre-Christian epoch, and which still persist in the superstitions of the people. Many others derive from anonymous poems based on some historical occurrence, more or less exaggerated by popular inspiration. There are legends from Castile, Galicia, Asturias, the Basque Country, Aragon, Catalunya, Valencia, Murica and Andalucia.
