Two small coffee-stains on cover of the Volume itself. Slipcase with some minor rubbing and occasional discoloration only. Otherwise in excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. Besides the vintage photographs all being signed by Marcus Adams, he also signed and dated the Volume on the endpaper: “Marcus Adams – 11/29”.

Original copper engraving portrait of english physician William Harvey, ″ first known physician to describe completely and in detail the systemic circulation and properties of blood”. The vintage engraving shows William Harvey, head-and-shoulders portrait, facing slightly left, in a medallion draped with cloth, also shows a drawing of the cardiovascular system, parts of a plant, and a snake entwined around a stick, suggesting a caduceus. [The original engraving is framed and comes with an exceptional Facsimile of the first edition of “De Motu Cordis (see images)”]. [Amsterdam], J. Houbraken, no year [c.1770]. Beautifully Framed. Size of frame with Harvey’s portrait: 32 cm x 38 cm. Size of the actual portrait engraving: 9.5 cm x 15.5 cm. Excellent condition !

Tear to cloth at front hinge of spine but binding still firm and strong. Interior bright and clean and the bookblock tight and complete with all illustrations. Excellent Provenance: With tiny – bookplate: “The Times” – Book Club – Oxford Street, London.

The rare photograph shows the statue at its original location, with locals walking in front. The sculptor of Schweigaard’s Statue was nowegian sculptor and educator Julius Olavus Middelthun, who taught among others, Edvard Munch at the Royal Drawing School in Christiania (Tegneskolen i Kristiania).
