Original Hardcover with new spinelabels. All Volumes in collector’s Mylar. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Provenance: From the library of Richard Meade (Ballymartle), with his Exlibris / Bookplate to pastedown. Minor browning only. Titlepage of Volume four missing, otherwise complete and the interior in excellent condition. A very rare find, this is one of the more elusive periodicals of the early 19th century, printed just after the Act of Union in 1800 was established and printed by english printer Luke Hansard for publishers and printers in London, Dublin and Cork.

Dublin, Printed by Graisberry & Campbell and sold by all booksellers, 1805. Small Octavo (11.5 cm x 18 cm). XXX, 178 pages plus Errata-leaf. Hardcover / Stunning, recent half leather and marbled-paper-covered-boards with gilt lettering and ornament to spine, bound to style of the 18th/19th century. Excellent condition. Tear in Errata-leaf professionally repaired. From the library of Richard Meade (Ballymartle), with his name in ink to titlepage.

Working copy with annotations and inscription by Editor John Nott and also being an “Association Copy” between John Nott and Barron Field of: “Select Poems from the Hesperides, or Works both Human and Divine of Robert Herrick, Esq. with occasional remarks by J.N. [in our copy, Nott has completed his pseudonym himself and reveals the “Nott”, followed by “M.D”]. – Accompanied also with the Head, Autographe and Seal of the Poet [this Frontispiece is missing in our copy].

Bristol, Printed and Published by J.M.Gutch, no year [1810]. Octavo. IV, 253 pages, followed by an interleaved section at the end of the book, being the original, printed Review by Barron Field from “The Quarterly Review” in 1810 in which Barron Field reviews Nott’s publication of Herrick’s Hesperides, which Nott has inscribed Hardcover / Modern half-leather in style of early 19th-century bindings. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Inscribed: “Barron Field – from the editor, Dr. Nott of Bristol – Hotwell [Waters]”. This being the original copy which Dr.John Nott sent to Barron Field for Review. With additional annotations and explanations on page 5, where Nott elaborates on 17th century poet Alexander Brome being the inspiration for the idea of Poem VII “No Loathsomeness in Love” and then Nott wrote down part of the poem by Brome in ink: “I vow I am so far from loving none….” (9 lines). Other annotation in ink (Nott) and pencil (possibly Barron Field) throughout the Volume.

Pagination: Volume I: Frontispiece, engraved titlepage, [2], 276, plus 1 page with “Directions to the Binder for placing the Plates”. With 31 handcoloured illustrations (including Frontispiece and titlepage) by caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson / Volume II: Frontispiece, [1], 277 pages plus 1 page with “Directions to the Binder for placing the Plates”. With 22 (of 24) handcoloured illustrations by caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson. Hardcover / Original half leather with original spine-labels and ornaments. Both Volumes with some rubbing but both in firm, original condition. Interior of Volume I with some mild foxing and fingerstaining only but all plates excellent. Interior of Volume II with a tear and loss of paper to the front free endpaper, some mild foxing, one plate and one textpage (page 11) slightly detached and with fraying). Minor wormholedamage to rear board (neglectable). Overall these two Volumes are in very good condition !

Hardcover / Original, contemporary green cloth with original red morocco label to spine. The Volume is now in protective Mylar. Stronger signs of foxing to “Virginius” but still in very good condition. Inscribed by James Sheridan Knowles to one Robert Willan Smith on the titlepage:″To Mr. Willan with the affectionate Respect + Gratitude of the Author”. Sheridan Knowles had a chance to be Willan’s successor but decided for a literary and acting career. / “The Hunchback” in excellent condition, also with inscription and signature of Knowles on the titlepage and with the ownership-inscription of Robert Willan Smith. Rare Cork related !
