Original Hardcover (Printed, paper-covered-boards. The original Volume now housed in a bespoke, recent Solander-Box. The binding a little shaky. The interior in excellent, extremely clean condition. Of utmost rarity. Already in the first chapter, Haliburton uses the technique of literary fiction in order to speak about the ability to travel everywhere (in mid 19th century)….″The Grand Tour now means a voyage round the Globe…” / Haliburton, known to have been “eager to promote immigration to the colonies of British North America” tries to entice to Travel. The Chapter “An Evening in Cork” talks about the narrator to “accompany my old college friend Cary to Monkstown in Ireland…..unlike my gruff and inhospitable countrymen, I advise you, when at Cork, to remain there, till you have ‘done’ the city and its environs and then to sail down the River…”.

[Cambridge, Massachusetts], no year [c.1948-1949] Octavo. 94 pages of manuscript notes and chapters 1, 2 and 4 of the final work with the 4 pages of conclusions in an envelope titled “Professor Rene Jasinski – 25 Little Hall, Cambridge 38 – Massachusetts”. With the dedication page planned and outlined: “A ma soeur Cécile affectueusement – R.J.”. Softcover. The paper brittle and several of the pages held together by paperclips. Some of the pages with tears and stronger signs of fraying. The defining work that secured Jasinski a place at Harvard.

[Association copy with provenance – riddle: From the library of one John Garland Jefferson, being either the brother of American Civil War Hero Thomas Garland Jefferson and received as a gift from his namesake father, John Garland Jefferson (as stated on the endpaper in contemporary ink), with his name signed in ink to the fontispiece of Volume One or alternatively, being John Garland Jefferson (born 1815 – date of death unknown), the son of Captain Samuel Allen Jefferson (1776-1843)]. Translated from the Italian by George Alexander Otis. With ten illustrations and six maps.

Ninth Edition, In Two Volumes, Revised and Corrected. New-Haven, T.Brainard, 1839. Octavo. Volume I: Frontispiece, 473 pages with four maps and four illustrations (including frontispice) / Volume II: Frontispice, IV, 468 pages with six illustrations (including frontispice) and two maps. Hardcover / Original full eather with gilt lettering and ornament on spine and boards. Bindings a little rubbed. Lower spines stronger rubbed and only very slightly damaged but the Volumes and bookblocks overall very firm and in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Some plates and pages with foxing (as usual with this edition). Both tissue-guards for the frontispieces in place. A stunning set regarding the American War of Independence with an interesting provenance.

Pagination: Printed Text-Volume: XLVI, 148 pages / Manuscript – Section: 72, (1) numbered pages with text in ink and drawings throughout (some in colour), followed by 76 empty pages. Original half-leather with gilt lettering and dating on spine and front board. Binding rough and pastedowns detaching. No titlepage due to the printed part being the printed course handed out at the R.M.A. Name of G.W.Johnson signed in pencil on Introduction-page of the Text-Volume and on titlepage of the manusscript-section.

Collation: Volume I: Engraved frontispiece of Stanhope, XVI, 352 pages / Volume II: (2), 355 pages / Volume III: (2), 376 pages / Volume IV: (2), 364 pages. (Collation complete). Hardcover / Original 18th century full calf with gilt lettering on original spinelabels. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Smaller dampstain to lower first and last two pages of two volumes only. The bindings a little shaky but holding. Provenance: From the library of Robert Doyne, with his Exlibris – bookplate to the front pastedown of all four volumes. While he died already in 1733 and these books were published in 1774, it is very likely that the bookplates were still applied by his librarian or family / Sir Robert Doyne (1651-1733) was member of the Irish House of Commons for New Ross from 1692 to 1695, and later a distinguished judge who served as Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer from 1695 to 1703 and Chief Justice of the Irish Common Pleas from 1703 to 1714. In the latter year like all the senior judges in Ireland appointed under Queen Anne he was removed by the new administration; while allegations of corruption were made, the removal seems to have been a simple matter of politics. Although the Irish House of Commons passed a resolution that he had acted corruptly no further action seems to have been taken against him and he lived in peaceful retirement for many years. The binding is fragile with the bookblock slightly separating from the binding. Still, the overall condition is still Good+ with foxing throughout (as usual with this publication) and a faded dampstain to rear endpaper and pastedown. From the library of Patrick MacCabe Fay, with his Bookplate / Exlibris to front free endpaper with the Family-Motto: “Toujours Fidele – Aut Vincere Aut Mori” [″Always Faithful – Either Win or Die”](see image). Very Rare publication !
