Cawson, Organized Interests of the State. Studies in Meso-Corporatism.

Cawson, Alan.

Organized Interests of the State. Studies in Meso-Corporatism.

London and others, Sage Publications, 1985. 21.5cm x 13.4cm. viii, 258 pages. Original illustrated softcover. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Pencil annotations on various pages throughout. From the library of german historian Klaus von Beyme. Sage Series in Neo-Corporatism.

This book represents a new application of corporatist research, to the study of how public policies are formed in Western democracies. Cawson shifts the focus of corporatist theory from the macro-level concerning broad societal trends and comparisons of national systems to the subnational level, bringing countries such as the UK and Canada within the parameters of corporatist analysis. What emerges is a new model of interest group politics that is not concerned with aggregating broad class interests but reflects the more specific concerns of particular categories.

Contributions include: Varieties of corporatism: the importance of the meso-level of interest intermediation – Alan Cawson/ Corporatism and industrial policy- Michael M. Atkinson and William D. Coleman/ Industrial training in Britain: the dilemmas of a neo-corporatist policy- Sarah Vickerstaff/ Corporatist incomes policies, the free-rider problem and the British labour government’s social contract- Jonothan Boston/ Corporatism and Thatcherism: is there life after death?– Kevin Bonnett/ State corporatism as a sectoral phenomenon: the case of the Quebec construction industry- William D. Coleman/ Neo-corporatism strategies in the British energy sector- Noelle Burgi/ Large firms and the representation of business interests in the UK and West German construction industry- Wyn Grant and Wolfgang Streeck/ Corporatist and pluralist patterns of policy-making for chemicals control: a comparison between West Germany and the USA- Volker Schneider/ Organized interests and industrial crisis management: restructuring the steel industry in West Germany, Italy and France- Martin Rhodes/ Some implications for state theory- Alan Cawson.
