The city of Romans in southern France had a population of nearly 8,000 in the sixteenth century. Each February it was the scene of a colourful and animated Mardi Gras Festival. In 1580 the winter festivities degenerated into a bloody ambush where the notables killed or imprisoned the leaders of the craftsman party.
