Alan Thomas shows, with real and convincing insight, the moral dilemma of a man who, forced into a position which he never wanted to occupy, honestly does not know which way duty lies; and who is not strong enough, when he is finally convinced that he should act in a certain way, to withstand the onslaughts from without which insist that his conscience is leading him astray. There is tension throughout, for until the end it is by no means clear in which direction Seton will jump. Above all, the book has an honesty and sincerity, and a really fundamental examination of personal motives in public matters, which are as valuable as they are unusual today. (Publisher).
