Hardcover / Original half-leather with gilt lettering on spine and marbled-paper-covered boards. Dampstain fading from pastedown, endpapers to page 80 of Volume I. All Volumes in beautifully firm and strong bindings and with some rubbing to the marbled paper covered boards with some lesions to the paper. Interior in general very good with occasional foxing. A very, very rare set in its orginal bindings and the only version of the frst edition of this important publication we ever were able to handle in our 32 years as antiquarian bookdealers.

Volumes for 1907 and 1917 show damp staining and damage to interior. Softcovers – Externally, very smart with occasional very minor rubbing to the head and tail and to corners. Interiors clean and bright. 1929 Volume, open tear to top corner of front board. Volumes for 1935 and 1937 show slight tears to spine but binding still firm and strong. Volume for1937 has detached front board and loose leaves near front. Former library copies – volumes carry subtle stamp of the Alpine Club on the preliminary pages.

6. [Cambridge Trinity College / Oxford Magdalen College / Scotland / England – 19th Century Tourism].

Vintage 19th-century Photoalbum with fiftythree (53) Large Albumen Prints of Oxford University and Cambridge University as well as tourist destinations visited in the year 1882 in Scotland and England. The Album shows with visits to Edinburgh, Loch Lomond and its “S.S.Rob Roy – Steamboat with Pier and Ben Venue, Loch Katrine, Callander Bridge and Ben Ledi, The Trossachs, then moves to Hastings and later shows many rare photographs of Cambridge University and Oxford University (including Trinity College and Magdalen College etc. (see complete list below)). Fantastic Album which also shows one magnificent photograph of Stonehenge and one of “The Major Oak” in Sherwood Forest in the year 1885.

Both volumes together contain 948 pages interleaved illustrations throughout the volumes (many of these plates are folding out) including a General Index. Volume I in octavo format and in a brown full leather with spinelabel / Volume II in large octavo and bound in an excellent green half morocco with gilt lettering on spine, marbled boards and leather corners. Both volumes with new endpapers. Some illustrations and text towards the end of Volume II with some faint dampstaining only. Three illustrations are present twice in these volumes (Plates 35, 54 and 84). Extremely rare publication in very good condition !!

Pagination: Volume I: XVI, 403, (1) pages / Volume II: 326, (2) pages including Errata-leaf / Volume III: X, 310 pages / Volume IV: 312 pages. Original contemporary red calf with gilt lettering and ornament to lacquer-polished-spine. The Volumes are numbered consecutively, even though these are two separate works. Excellent condition of the binding and interior of this important publication with very minor signs of foxing only ! All the maps in wonderful condition ! First french edition of “Travels into the Interior of Southern Africa” (Barrow’s journey with Lord Macartney in 1797 to the Cape of Good Hope) plus two further Volumes which describe the second journey in 1801 / 1802 to Saldanha Bay [Saldanhabaai] with an early image of Robben Island. The survey of the Dutch colonies was not only a seminal work on South Africa but the beautifully engraved, large folding map of South Africa was a turning point of african cartography and geographical illustration.

The Gazette of Fashion, and Magazine of The Fine Arts and Belle Lettres, dedicated by permission to His Royal Highness the Duke of York [With the rare Portrait of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and an early case of “Musical Copyright” discussed on page 137]. Published in weekly, monthly and wuarterly parts. Composed of Original Papers and Music, with Reviews of Literature in General. Illustrated with numerous Engravings, Portraits of Eminent Persons and Subjects connected with Fashion and the Fine Arts.

Two Parts in one Volume (First half year from January to July, 1822). London, Published for C.M.Westmacott, by Hoffmann, 1822. Quarto (20 cm x 27 cm). Portrait-Frontispiece, 214, Portrait Frontispiece, 208 pages plus Index for both quarterly parts with listing of all engravings, scores of original pieces of music, portraits, engravings of the latest, “newest” Parisian Costumes etc. Original Hardcover / 19th – century half leather with gilt lettering on spine. With 11 instead of 23 full-page illustrations of which some included are not called for and others seem to have never been part of the collection. Some minor signs of wear only, a few very faint signs of foxing, a little dusty endpapers but especially the text and illustrations all in generally very good or even better condition with some minor signs of wear only. Extremely Rare !

Original Sampson Low Edition – Reduced from the Original Folio Edition. Two Volumes (complete set). London, Sampson Low, Son and Marston, 1868. Slim-Quarto (17 cm x 25 cm). Volume I: XII, 80 plates / Volume II: [6], 80 plates. Both Volumes include the tissue-guards for protecting the plates and all corresponding explanatory text and Index is present. Hardcover / Original publisher’s half-leather with gilt lettering and ornament on spine. One of the earliest and rarest publications with chromolithographic botanical illustrations. Excellent condition besides some mild, faded dampstains to some plates. Important: These bindings are usually broken, which is NOT the case here. While the book came from the library of Daniel Conner (Connerville / Manch House), the book belonged to Henrietta L. Conner [Inscribed by Sophia Perry Hornik to Henrietta L. Conner in 1890].
