A rare opportunity to acquire this important publication in a firm and beautiful binding. The exceptional restoration was done by an english master-bindery.

Very good overall condition with only minor signs of wear. From the library of Daniel Conner (Connerville / Manch House), with his Exlibris / Bookplate to pastedown. With a manuscript – entry to the rear endpaper: “Dan [meaning Daniel Conner] began Astronomy April 19th 1812”.

Including the original endpapers and the original half-title. Front free endpaper and halftitle with dampstain to lower corner only. Dampstain in lower corner of the titlepage only faintly present. One of the rarest titles of Irish Literature and one of the rarest, early gothic-novels / horror-novels. Absolutely scarce and in excellent condition after the beautiful restoration.

[4], 174 pages with three further titlepages after page33 (″Aede Christi”), after page 135 (″Epistolae Nonnullae”), after page 151 (″Alumnorum Versiculi”) and after page 161 (″Lector Candide Coronidis”). Hardcover / Modern half-leather with gilt lettering and spinelable. Bound to style of the 17th century by an english masterbindery, which made sure to preserve the original endpapers and pastedowns. An excellent restoration with preserved patina of this scarce work. The titlepage with a professional repair. Although no sign of it, this book came from the library of Daniel Conner (Manch House). Name of another former owner to pastedown: “Thomas Davis – his book , October 21, 1790”. Extremely rare !

Important scottish enlightenment publication. From the library of one “John Courtenay”, with his name in ink on the titlepages of both Volumes. This is possibly John Courtenay (22 August 1738 – 24 March 1816), who was an Irish officer in the British Army, later becing a politician in England. Including a congratulatory poem from Henry Lemoine to Sylvanus Urban, “On commencing his Sixty-Eighth Volume”, printed on the last page of Volume II. Hardcover / Original 18th century boards, professionally rebacked by using the original spinelabels. Excellent condition after the perfect restoration by an english masterbindery.

New Spine-Label applied to Volume I. Both Volumes housed in a bespoke built Solander Box. Some minor rubbing. Provenance: From the library of a member of the 1798 Rebellion under Wolfe Tone, William Livingston Webb, with Webb’s name in ink to the titlepage of Volume I and his name also to the first page of Volume II. Webb notes in Volume two that he purchased the books in Lille. While other Protestant Leaders of the Rebellion were hanged, William Livingston Webb was exiled. With a manuscript-poem in english and remarks in french, citing “Voltaire” to rear endpaper of Volume II: “Les Tome auteur n’art de l’esprit qui autart qu’il enfant, ny le recherchant jamais pensent avec priment avec clarte” (?) – Voltaire (?).
