Inscribed by Philip Rieff to Kurt Wolff, a fellow member of the Brandeis Faculty. Rieff’s ideas and writing reached the peak of popularity in the 1960s, when he was known as cultural philosopher and an interpreter of the works of Sigmund Freud. He contributed to the idea of cultural modernization and secularization via his theory about a “Psychological Man.” With some markings in pencil by Kurt Wolff in the text and on the rear endpaper. Very good condition.

202. Feigl, Herbert / [Nagel, Ernest]

Manuscript Letter Signed [MLS] from Herbert Feigl to Ernest Nagel in which he looks foward to Nagel’s “Carus Lectures” and he says he will be “proud & honored to present you at Columbus”. Feigl talks about his upcoming decision on his presidential address and shares with Nagel his momentary topic being “Troubles of Transcendence”. Feigl also speaks about [Karl] Popper coming to Indiana and that he will “invite Gruenbaum, Salomon and other to discuss probabil., induction and if possible also logic of quantum mechanics”. Feigl also mentions “Popper’s intensity is remarkable” and “Feyerabend is a brilliant genius” etc. / Feigl closes by mentioning his success giving a guest speaker’s address to the American Philosophical Association in Washington (August 1958): “I had an audience of more than 3500 people – ‘Aristotle never had it so good’ said one of my friends’”.

Hardcover in custom – made solanderbox. Recently rebound in half-leather with marbled paper-covered-boards. The bookblock in very good condition with some minor, contemporary inkstains. Name of preowner “Exlibris Bernard Rielliae [″Bernard Reilly”] in contemporary ink (16th or 17th century entry). Small lesion to titlepage and first three pages only. Very faint, faded dampstain to the outer margins of a few pages.

The letter was sent from Sussex in England and includes information about Toulin’s latest book and his dedication to tirelessly writing together with his wife June Goodfield. June Goodfield has added to the letter as well by alerting Aiken and his wife of Stephen and her coming to Boston again.

208. Aiken, Henry David / [Hans Jonas] / Quine, W.V.O.

Typed letter, signed by German-born, American Jewish philosopher Hans Jonas, loosely inserted in Henry David Aiken’s pamphlet “God and Evil: A Study of Some Relations Between Faith and Morals”. The Essay by Aiken is inscribed and signed by Aiken in a sarcastic manner: “To God, from one of his congregation – Shem”. In the letter, Jonas reflects on two pages on an evening with Henry David Aiken and his then wife Lillian Woodworth. In his letter to Aiken, Hans Jonas reports back to Aiken after reading his essay [″God and Evil”] and calls it “a beautiful piece of work – in style and content worthy of your “master” who wrote on natural theology….”. Jonas goes on encouraging Aiken: “you are also dead wrong n not publishing a collection of your essays in ethical theory. If your pal Quine can do it “from a logical point of you [sic]”, so can you “from a moral point of view”. Jonas also mentions “that it is worth writing about the ancient problem opf a theodicy in a contemporary context”. [The Essay is n Offprint from Ethics, An International Journal of Social, Political and Legal Philosophy, Volume LXVIII, No. 2].

Very good+ condition. Stapled. Only minimal signs of staining. The letter also discusses a Reference for one “Ed Sayles” and Jonas suggest that Aiken writes “casual but fairly strong” to Howard R. Bartlett, professor of history and head of the Department of Humanities at MIT.
