Hardcover / Original, early 19th century full leather with gilt lettering and date on lower spine [″London, 1802”]. Beautiful, richly ornamented master-bindings. All Volumes in strong, protective collector’s Mylar, which invites the reader/collector to use the work without fear of handling. Armorial Bookplates / ExLibris of Daniel Callaghan, Esquire of Lotabeg (MP for Cork City 1830-1849) to all five pastedowns (Motto: “Fidus et Audax”). Marbled endpapers a little dusty but beautiful. Volume 1, 2 and 5 with some weakening to the spine (slightly cracked), but holding and still firm overall. All plates present. As known and always found with this scarce edition, the original, titled tissue-guards all in place, have created stronger signs of foxing to the plates but in sharp contrast the text in all the five Volumes in bright and clean condition with only occasional faint staining. Endpapers with some minor browning. Very good+ condition overall with some rubbing and minor bumping to the Volumes but really only minor signs of external wear. Extremely sought after publication, not to be confused with the later, much more common Octavo Editions !

[A New and Correct Chart of Cork Harbour (This is the rare 18th century Map of Cork Harbour which also shows Haulbowline Island, which is the original location of “The Royal Cork Yacht Club”, later “The Water Club of the Harbour of Cork”, the Map shows also the Old Head of Kinsale, Crosshaven Harbour, Haulbowline Island, Curraghbinny, Spike Island, Ringaskiddy etc.)] – Correct Title of the Map: “A New and Correct Chart of the Harbour of Corke by the Revd. J. Lindsay, Late of His Majesty’s Ship Fougueux”. There is an inset Map showing “A Continuation of Corke Harbour from a smaller Scale”. The scale of this reads “A Scale of three English”. Below the chart is a coastal profile entitled “A View of the Land from the Old Head of Kinsale to Hawks Rock, the Old Head W b S 7 Miles. Cork Harbour mark’d *. ″

364. Levy, Arthur Joseph / Zangwill, Israel.

Archive / Collection of more than 350 items, letters, documents, ephemera, pamphlets, manuscript notes, receipts , manuscript letters from the private library of Providence (Rhode Island) lawyer, Arthur (Art) Joseph Levy. The collection includes an important, controversial typescript-essay (8 pages) on Israel Zangwill’s address before the American Jewish Congress at Carnegie Hall on October 14th, 1923 (″Watchmen, what of the Night ?”); with manuscript annotations and remarks on Israel Zangwill’s position “the hopes of Jewry for the establishment of a Jewish State in Palestine are doomed to disappointment”. The collection includes a plethora of interesting letterheads of jewish organizations and also important documentation of Levy’s contribution to and support for the “Palestine Foundation Fund”, (receipt from Boston, Mass. June 1923). Levy, who was a graduate of Brown and Boston University Law School, practiced law in Providence, Rhode Island and led an active life as a member and leader of several Jewish civic organizations, such as the Jewish Family and Children’s Service, which he established and led for twenty years, Rhode Island Jewish Historical Society, the Temple Beth-El Brotherhood, the Miriam Hospital, the Touro Fraternal Association and the Jewish Home for the Aged of Rhode Island. He was also a prominent member of the American Bar Association, the Brown University Alumni Association and the Brown Club of Rhode Island. Highly regarded as a jurist, he was a member of the Commission to Consolidate State Laws, a member of the Advisory Committee of the Federal Tax Institute of New England and an editor of the Rhode Island Bar Journal. Included in this archive are a group of letters written during World War I discussing his role in the Jewish Welfare Board of the United States Army and Navy, an invitation to a fund-raising dinner for the Jewish Orphanage of Rhode Island, a group of documents and letters discussing the establishment of a Jewish country club in Providence, several documents from the early 1920s concerning the mostly Jewish fraternity Phi Epsilon Pi and several items relating to Levy’s personal life, such as personal letters, bills from clothiers and invitations to social events. The River Side / The River’s Side – A Poem by R A Millikin. [With an original Watercolour as Frontispice, possibly by Millikin himself, who was, among many other things, also a Watercolour-Artist]. Book I – Book II – Book III.

First and only Edition. [Cork], [1807]. Quarto. Frontispice – Watercolour, 147 pages with several of the pages misbound but complete. Private Half-Leather. Binding and Volume overall in very poor condition. Wide margins, formerly stitched. The Volume ahas all the trademarks of a working-copy, which could explain the stunning Watercolour as Frontispice (or even as titlepage). Faded dampstain to upper margins. While the Volume is rough, it has the typical charme of an underestimated, very rare publication by a local Cork poet [which is manifested by Milliken dedicating the work to the members of the Cork Library Society at the time. This Volume is of utmost rarity.

BUT: Interior absolutely clean and nearly unread (pages of both Volumes are still uncut). This set is extremely rare !

The stunning association copy between two german social scientists in exile is a testament to their collegiality and friendship. With one annotation and some markings by Wolff. It is not clear if Wolff met Mannheim in London or if the offprint was sent to him. There is a note in ink by Wolff on the endpaper stating: “Columbus, May 13 ‘46”.
