Hardcover / Professionally restored and decoratively rebound in full leather with new endpapers and spinelabels. This important publication comes from the eminent libraries of Indiana State Senator Calvin Fletcher and subsequently his son, educationalist, senator and Civil War Surgeon, William Baldwin Fletcher. With some annotations in the Index, highlighting for example the chapter referring to Montesquieu’s view on “Corruption” [″Of the corruption of the principles of the three governments”]. William Baldwin Fletcher, who inherited the book from his father, subsequently gifted it to a close friend of his: “Presented to Chas M O’Brien by his friend W.B.Fletcher”. Some professional paper-restoration and otherwise a very good condition with some minor signs of wear only.

Both Volumes in protective collector’s mylar. From the library of Richard Meade (Ballymartle), with his Exlibris / Bookplate to pastedown of Volume One and the name of John Meade to the titlepage of Volume II. Faded dampstain only to the endpapers of Volume I / Minor wormhole-damage to the endpaper and titlepage of Volume II. Otherwise in very good and firm condition. A very rare and significant publication.

To which is prefixed a copious Introduction to Geography. The whole calculated to explain the Occurences in Modern History. Illustrated with four large and accurate Maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and America (only the Map of Asia is present: “New & Correct Map of Asia – Drawn from the latest and best Authorities by J. Dublin, Printed for Peter Wilson in Dame-Street, 1759. Small Octavo. XXXVIII, (1), 512 unnumbered pages (collation complete) with only the folded Map on Asia present and the other three maps missing. Including 6 pages of “Books, printed for and sold by Peter Wilson, in Dame-Street”. Original Hardcover (full calf on five raised bands with original spinelabel intact). Half a page in chapter “M” torn out. Faint dampstain throughout. Otherwise in very good condition. Binding rubbed and bumped on the corners but absolutely firm and tight. Minor traces of foxing and staining only. Name of preowner in 17th or 18th century ink on endpaper: “Daniel Eugene MacNamara”. Very rare Dublin Edition of this publication with a full-page recommendation of the famous Lexicographer Benjamin Martin.

Hardcover / Original, 18th century full-leather with gilt lettering and ornament on spine. Binding very firm and only slightly bumped and rubbed. Overall in a very good condition with some signs of external wear. With the name “John Morrison” on the titlepage [possibly the 18th century – Architect John Morrison from Midleton, with a connection to Castlemartyr]. This book came subsequently from the Library of Daniel Conner, Connerville / Bandon / Manch House in which also a set of Buffon, from the library of Richard Boyle Bernard, Dean of Leighlin and MP for Bandon Bridge was included.

The Volume is in protective Mylar. Very good condition with some minor signs of wear only. Even thouh lacking the Illustrations, a solid reading-copy of this famous book, with only minor signs of browning and foxing.Name of several pre-owners on half-title, title and frontispiece [Michael Gleeson and George Roch of Woodbine Hill].

Annotations on pastedown, endpaper and within text are focused on crossreferencing Ainsworth’s publication with other contemporaries and their conflicting or corresponding thoughts on Idolatry (Hugh Broughton “on the consent of times” gets mentioned etc.).
