Excellent condition of one of the rarest books on the History of irish commercial fishing and suggestions for professionalizing irish fishing industry in the 19th century. This book comes from the library of irish engineer William Le Fanu, with his bookplate to the pastedown and a stamp “Board of Public Works” to the dedication-page. The books interior with all the lithographic illustrations in very good condition. Occasional foxing only. Extremely rare; very scarce publication ! This is a superior example of this book; with all illustrations in place and in excellent condition.

Hardcover / Excellent, full green morocco, with rich gilt tooling and lettering. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Extraordinary little hand-bible of the 6th Duke of Bedford.

The Energies of Men. [Personal copy of William James’ wife Alice Howe Gibbens – signed: “A.H.James”]. Stunning provenance of the First Edition-offprint from ‘The Philosophical Review’, Vol. XVI, No. 1, January, 1907, of William James’ Presidential Address to the American Philosophical Association on December 28th, 1906. A study of psychic energy ranging from Pierre Janet to Yoga to the “mind-cure” movement. James already is fascinated in this address about G.Papini’s “Doctrine of Action”, “the study of all human powers and means”.

1907. Octavo. 19 pages. Original Wrappers / Softcover. The wrappers detached and brittle. The pages stapled and in very good condition. James retired in January 1907 from Harvard. Possibly one of the rarest offprints with a William James-connection and with high probability, a gift from James to his wife. Books with the provenance of his wife never seem to surface on the market.

Original pastedowns retained with the original bookbindery-label of C.T.Jefferies & Sons from Bristol. Some of the Cruikshank-plates very good, some with strong foxing (as usual). The text fresh and clean. After the restoration, this Volume is now in excellent condition with some minor signs of wear only.

“Rousseau” [Significant Provenance: Irving Babbitt’s annotated working copy of “Rousseau” by John Morley].

Two Volumes. London, Macmillan and co., 1896. Small Octavo. 337, 348 pages. Hardcover / Bothy Volumes in their original publisher’s cloth with gilt lettering on spine. In protective Mylar. Later edition of the monograph on Rousseau by the biographer of Gladstone. Both volumes very good in red cloth-covered boards with slight wear at corners and head and foot of spine. These volumes origin from the library of Irving Babbitt, co-founder of New Humanism and great enemy of the thought of Rousseau. Babbitt’s penciled notes / annotations can be found throughout the two volumes, and his ornate ownership signature spreads across the front blank of volume two.

With a newspaper-clipping on an event of Inverness Central School loosely inserted and with a newspaper-clipping shopwing the elderly “Earl of Southesk and Mr. Donald Steuart-Fothringham going out to shoot over Petterden Moor, Angus”. A wonderful association copy !
