Pastedown with armorial Bookplate / Exlibris of Scottish statesman, the Right Honorable Patrick Hume, Earl of Marchmont, Viscount of Blasonberry, Lord Polwarth of Polwarth & Lord High Chancellorof Scotland – [Bookplate dated at 1702 – Motto: “Fides Probata Coronat” – “True to the End”]. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Minor lesion/tear to outer margins of page 461. With manuscript entries by the preowner to the top of each page, detailing each page for easier access into sections of countries (Germany, Poland, France, Spain, Britain, Rome, Sweden etc.). This book is rare; but with the excellent provenance from the library of Sir Patrick Hume, an even more important and desirable publication.

Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Dustjackets slightly stained and price-clipped. Interior is bright and clean. Patrick Leigh Fermor’s personal copy with his name in ink on the endpaper of Volume II: “Patrick Leigh Fermor. London, July 1945.”. Leigh Fermor obviously rewarded himself with the purchase of Doughty’s masterpiece directly after World War Two. Stunning item, manifesting Doughty’s heavy influence on Patrick Leigh Fermor’s Travel writing. The set includes also three first editions in original dustjackets, of Patrick Leigh Fermor’s famous Travel writings: A Time of Gifts, Between the Woods and the Water [SIGNED], The Broken Road (with the second book, “Between the Woods and the Water” signed by Patrick Leigh Fermor.

The Energies of Men. [Personal copy of William James’ wife Alice Howe Gibbens – signed: “A.H.James”]. Stunning provenance of the First Edition-offprint from ‘The Philosophical Review’, Vol. XVI, No. 1, January, 1907, of William James’ Presidential Address to the American Philosophical Association on December 28th, 1906. A study of psychic energy ranging from Pierre Janet to Yoga to the “mind-cure” movement. James already is fascinated in this address about G.Papini’s “Doctrine of Action”, “the study of all human powers and means”.

1907. Octavo. 19 pages. Original Wrappers / Softcover. The wrappers detached and brittle. The pages stapled and in very good condition. James retired in January 1907 from Harvard. Possibly one of the rarest offprints with a William James-connection and with high probability, a gift from James to his wife. Books with the provenance of his wife never seem to surface on the market.

First English-language edition, following the low Dutch edition of 1717. London, Printed and Sold by Assigns of J.Sowle, at the Bible in George-Yard, Lomabrd -street, 1722. Folio (21 cm x 31 cm). [12], 723, [19] pages (including a thorough Index), plus 4 unnumbered pages of a catalogue of “Books Printed and Sold by the Assigns of J. Sowles”. Hardcover / Original, late 18th century leather with original spine-label and ornament to boards. Six raised bands; spine starting but still firm and holding. Overall very good condition. Bookplate / Exlibris of Arthur Hofmann to pastedown. Excellent and interesting provenance this being one of the most important publications on Quaker – History and originating from one of the oldest and most influential Quaker – Families in England and Wales.

Original pastedowns retained with the original bookbindery-label of C.T.Jefferies & Sons from Bristol. Some of the Cruikshank-plates very good, some with strong foxing (as usual). The text fresh and clean. After the restoration, this Volume is now in excellent condition with some minor signs of wear only.
