Very good condition with signs of wear to the binding. A wonderful example of this beautifully typeset publication with spacious margins and a delight to use. From the personal library of William Spark (20 Blades Street, Lancaster), with his name and address in ink to endpaper.

The dedications are written by several former classmates of the recipient of this monograph. The book deals with: The House at Stowe / The Family / The Gardens and Grounds / The First Lustre / Stowe in War and Peace / The Ten Years’ Grace // This book also comes with a publication by Anthony Miall (″Musical Bumps” by Anthony Miall – With Drawings by Ken Pyne).

Hardcover / Contemporary full calf with blindstamped ornament tooled along spine. Binding stronger rubbed and upper spine slightly damaged; but the volume firm and in very good condition. Small cutout to endpaper. Smaller, faded dampstain from page 247 onwards. Dampstain to both endpapers. Text otherwise clean and bright ! Name of William L. Webb in ink on titlepage.

Paris, Desnos, 1766. Quarto (30 cm x 22.5 cm). Collation complete: Bilingual titlepage, 12 double-page maps of England, partly beautifully border-coloured, 6 unnumbered pages of Index with distances in miles, one (1) General Map of England (″Carte Generale” of Engand by D’Ogilby), 101 full-page maps of routes/streets, Engraved titlepage for the Appendix, One (1) double-page of explanations for the London-City-Plan, 17 beautiful maps and engravings of a variety of english cities, also with a section on Ireland (Dublin, Waterford, Kinsale, Galway, Limerick). Original 18th-century contemporary calf with gilt lettering on spine and on five raised bands. The Volume is now protected in Collector’s Mylar. Very good+ condition with only minor signs of external wear. Some rubbing and corners slightly bumped but overall excellent. Interior near fine with only the slightest occasional spotting. Extremely Rare and even rarer in this condition !

Lehmann’s personal copy of Sean O’Faolain’s Autobiography with the original dustjacket in poor condition but the Volume itself very good.

Hardcover / Original publisher’s cloth without the dustjacket [Price includes the preparation of a custom-made clamshell-box for the buyer of this extremely rare book]. Private giftinscription on endpaper. Binding a bit fragile and rear gutter starting. Boards slightly stained and a bit grubby. Still in very good condition. Interior very clean. This is one of the rare opportunities to buy this Magnus Opus in a signed version, which is nearly impossible to find ! Signed and dated by Baron Blake on the titlepage: “Robert Blake – March 31st 1970”.

Collation: Volume I: Engraved frontispiece of Stanhope, XVI, 352 pages / Volume II: (2), 355 pages / Volume III: (2), 376 pages / Volume IV: (2), 364 pages. (Collation complete). Hardcover / Original 18th century full calf with gilt lettering on original spinelabels. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Smaller dampstain to lower first and last two pages of two volumes only. The bindings a little shaky but holding. Provenance: From the library of Robert Doyne, with his Exlibris – bookplate to the front pastedown of all four volumes. While he died already in 1733 and these books were published in 1774, it is very likely that the bookplates were still applied by his librarian or family / Sir Robert Doyne (1651-1733) was member of the Irish House of Commons for New Ross from 1692 to 1695, and later a distinguished judge who served as Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer from 1695 to 1703 and Chief Justice of the Irish Common Pleas from 1703 to 1714. In the latter year like all the senior judges in Ireland appointed under Queen Anne he was removed by the new administration; while allegations of corruption were made, the removal seems to have been a simple matter of politics. Although the Irish House of Commons passed a resolution that he had acted corruptly no further action seems to have been taken against him and he lived in peaceful retirement for many years.
